The Calhoun School, a prestigious Upper West Side private school undertook an extensive renovation on one of its buildings. With the help of Fox & Fowle Architects, the school added several floors on top of the existing building. To create some much needed green space and room for outside play, the architects envisioned a rooftop garden with a lawn, gardening space for the children and an area planted with low maintenance, drought-resistant plants. To help with the engineering and for the installation of this greenroof garden, Fox & Fowle turned to Town and Gardens and its partner firm, Roofscapes, Inc. The result of this cooperation is a beautiful and usable green space that employs innovative technologies to make it able to withstand heavy use by the school children and provides opportunities for education and relaxation.
