This landmark skyscraper in the middle of midtown Manhattan was to receive a total renovation, including the neglected gardens on two levels. Every detail including the plantings underwent landmark commission scrutiny, as the gardens were an integral part of both the restoration and a major sculpture exhibition. (NEXT)

There where numerous challenges to be met to make this installation a success:
The landscape architect’s carefully thought out design called for the strictest adherence to the plans and specifications. Spacing, dimensions, and layout had to be right on the money for over 1000 azaleas, ilex and boxwoods. Even the groundcovers and bulbs were planted on a grid with the help of a line guide.
Due to work by other trades, the removal and installation phase of the project spanned 10 months. Excavation started as soon as the ground had thawed and the final plantings went in just as next winter set.
